150 youth from Tharaka-Nithi County graduated from Huawei's DigiTruck programme, which has been underway since February 2026.
The graduation marked the successful completion of a digital skills programme that equipped the youth with knowledge in online work, digital entrepreneurship, and e-learning.
Since its launch in 2019, DigiTruck has trained over 10,000 youth across the country. The programme uses an innovative mobile classroom built from a shipping container to deliver digital skills training to remote parts of Kenya.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony held at Chuka Picnic Grounds on Monday, 23 March 2026, Hillary Olemoke, a representative from the Office of the Principal Secretary, State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries, urged the youth to embrace their newly gained skills and use them positively. He added that the programme was initiated to impart digital skills to young people whose future is digital.
“Seventy-five percent of jobs today require digital skills. We ask young people to embrace this technology to empower themselves and secure jobs both locally and abroad,” he said.
Mr. Olemoke also highlighted that the government is working closely with partners to ensure digital hubs are constructed and equipped with the necessary tools to promote digital skills. He encouraged the youth to take advantage of such initiatives for growth.
“We will partner with government agencies to ensure our digital hubs are well equipped. Many programmes will come through that sector. We also appreciate and thank partners, and encourage them to develop more initiatives to benefit and empower the youth as they prepare for the job market,” he said.

Leng Yujie, Public Affairs Director at Huawei Kenya, emphasized Huawei’s commitment to inclusivity in the digital era. “At Huawei we believe in leaving no one behind in the digital era. We train them on using basic software skills and AI. We are planning to conduct trainings in all the 47 counties in Kenya, which will culminate in a national graduation ceremony at Kisumu this year,” he said.
Huawei Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Coordinator Timothy Ombega noted that the training aims to bridge the digital divide and empower youth to participate in the digital economy.
He added that Tharaka-Nithi is among 41 counties that have so far benefited from the training in Kenya.

Head of Communication at the State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Martin Morris Mbogo, noted that Principal Secretary Betsy Njagi is working with elected Members of Parliament from Maara, Tharaka, and Chuka Igambang’ombe constituencies to facilitate the equipping of digital hubs.
He urged the youth to utilize digital skills wisely to grow themselves, saying there is immense potential in the digital space.

Allan Munene, a graduate of the programme, thanked Huawei for extending the project to Tharaka-Nithi County, saying, “Digital skills are no longer a luxury. They are a necessity in our community. We are celebrating the important skills we have learned.”
