Tharaka-Nithi County Woman Representative Susan Ngugi has asked the clergy to be at the frontline in calling for peace and dialogue, amidst the unrest and violence witnessed in the country.
Speaking at Vision and Victory in Jesus Christ Church in Mukuuni, Chuka Igambang'ombe Constituency, the Woman Representative thanked residents of Tharaka-Nithi for not engaging in the destruction of property and businesses witnessed in other parts of the country. She called for calm and dialogue between the government and residents to avert further protests and find a lasting solution.
"Don't shy away from correcting politicians when they go wrong. The clergy should be at the frontline in calling for dialogue and peace in the country. We ask that the clergy act as middlemen to bring conversation and dialogue between the government and residents, to unite towards finding solutions to matters causing political tensions in the country," she said.
According to Ngugi, the country is highly dependent on the youth for posterity, urging an end to the blame game while calling for national unity.
"We are not in a competition over who is standing with the youth more. We should all unite, come to the negotiation table, and solve our differences. If we fight each other over who is supporting Gen-Z more, we risk losing. Kenya depends on young people for posterity. Let the church call for dialogue, blame games will not work," she added.
On Friday, the Anglican Church of Kenya called for an end to the protests, saying they were being hijacked by criminals to ignite violence and destruction. The church added that the protests have caused unnecessary loss of lives and destruction across the country.
According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the Saba Saba commemoration protest death toll has now risen to thirty-eight (38) people, with at least one hundred and thirty (130) people still nursing injuries at home and in various health facilities across the country.
