Governor Muthomi Njuki has asked the government to consider splitting revenue collected from Meru National Park with the County Government of Tharaka-Nithi.
Speaking at the 2025 Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kajiunduthi Stadium, under the theme "Tourism, Wildlife, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE)", Governor Njuki noted that Tharaka-Nithi held the longest boundary with the park, deserving a share of the park's revenue.
"There are people who don't know we have one of the biggest parks called Mt Kenya National Park in Tharaka Nithi County. We are also hosts to the elephant maternity and the best gate to climb Mt. Kenya is Chogoria gate. We are a tourist destination, we just need to market it more and get activities for our youth to get employment", he said.
"We have asked the President when he is considering counties for partnership such as Kajiado with Amboseli National Park, Narok with Maasai Mara National Park and Taita Taveta with Tsavo National Park, that we deserve a partnership for our park. We also want to share the revenue with the Ministry of Tourism", Njuki added.
The Governor, in efforts to preserve the environment from human-led degradation asked the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) to partner with the county government to upgrade Weru Tea Factory's tea drying process from using firewood to own generated electricity.
He also gave a warning to individuals encroaching forested areas such as Kiera Hills for farming activities, asking the National Government through the County Commissioner to collaborate and crack the whip on those found culpable.
Njuki, in his address invited NGOs to fund and partner the newly introduced Constituency Cultural Festivals aimed at promoting cultural diversity and promote heritage across the county.
The Governor announced that Maara, Chuka and Tharaka Cumtural Festivals would curtain raise for the annual main county cultural event, the Tharaka-Nithi Uta Gate Cultural Festival.
