Maara Constituency has disbursed cheques worth KShs 4.2 million through the Uwezo Fund to 25 groups across the constituency in a bid to enhance economic empowerment.
The fund, a flagship programme under Vision 2030, was established to address the socio-economic empowerment of women, youth, and persons living with disabilities through the expansion of credit, capacity building, and table banking at the constituency level.
According to Maara Constituency Member of Parliament Kareke Mbiuki, KShs 43 million has been made available in the constituency as a revolving fund since 2014 to promote businesses and entrepreneurship.
Out of the KShs 4.2 million disbursed, Mwimbi Ward takes the lion’s share, with KShs 1,100,000 allocated to 7 groups.
In Muthambi Ward, KShs 1,040,000 will be distributed to 5 groups, while KShs 790,000 will go to 4 groups from Chogoria Ward.
Ganga Ward, with 3 groups, received KShs 690,000, while Mitheru Ward received KShs 600,000 for 6 groups.
Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki commended the groups for working together in common interest to benefit from the funds, noting that some groups were multiple-time beneficiaries of the fund.
“I urge new groups to learn from the success of those that have benefited more from the funds. If well utilized, the funds will boost the local economy, create jobs, and drive development,” he said.
